AS and A level Latin

For the student whose interest is in language and literature, Latin is an ideal and challenging subject. In the past two years all of our students have achieved a grade A at A2 level.

At ASand A2, we follow the OCR specification. The AS course is composed of the following two units:

Latin Language:  this unit consists of two short pieces of Latin prose to be translated into English. A defined vocabulary list is issued at the start of the course. Latin Verse and Prose Literature: we study about 200 lines of Ovid's Metamorphoses, a collection of tales from mythology, and a similar amount of the politician Cicero's speech attacking his rival Catiline.

Each examination lasts 1 hour.

We normally expect AS students to have achieved at least a B at GCSE Latin before they embark on the course.

At A2, we take the following two units:

Latin Verse: this unit includes a verse set text and a passage of verse for unseen translation and comprehension Latin Prose: similarly, this unti involves a prose set text and a passage of prose for unseen translation and comprehension

Latin is highly regarded by universities and employers. Recent A level students have gone on to study Latin, Economics, History, Politics, Chemistry, Business Studies and Law.
